Our Causes

Fighting Prosopis juliflora a.k.a Mathenge )

Botanical Brigades Consortium promotes tree planting and landscape restoration as a sustainable solution to the growing threat of Mathenge (Prosopis juliflora), one of Kenya's most aggressive invasive plant species. Originally introduced to combat desertification, Mathenge has spread uncontrollably across vast areas, displacing indigenous vegetation, degrading grazing lands, blocking waterways, and reducing biodiversity. Its dense, thorny thickets also pose serious risks to livestock, wildlife, and local communities while contributing to the depletion of underground water resources.

Through community-led restoration initiatives, Botanical Brigades works with local partners to remove invasive vegetation and replace it with indigenous tree species that restore ecological balance and improve climate resilience. These efforts help rehabilitate degraded landscapes, protect water catchments, revive native habitats, and restore productive pasture and farmland. By combining environmental conservation with community participation and sustainable livelihoods, the Consortium is creating healthier ecosystems while empowering local communities to become long-term stewards of their natural environment.

Achieving Our Mission Responsibly

By planting indigenous trees, we are achieving the environmental benefits that invasive species such as Mathenge were originally introduced to provide, but in a far more sustainable and ecologically responsible way. We believe that restoring healthy ecosystems locally contributes to a healthier environment and a more resilient planet for future generations.
